Background of the Study
Accurate attendance tracking is crucial for academic accountability and operational efficiency in higher education. At Federal University, Dutse, the implementation of a biometric‑based attendance system is being investigated as a means to eliminate the inaccuracies and inefficiencies associated with traditional manual attendance methods. Biometric technologies, such as fingerprint and facial recognition systems, offer a reliable way to verify the identities of lecturers and students. These systems automatically record attendance data, reducing the scope for proxy attendance and human error (Chinedu, 2023; Musa, 2024). The integration of biometric systems ensures that attendance records are maintained in real time and are easily accessible for analysis. This facilitates improved academic monitoring, enables data‑driven decision‑making, and enhances overall institutional transparency. Moreover, the use of biometric authentication supports the security of academic records by preventing unauthorized access. However, the adoption of such systems also raises challenges regarding data privacy, initial implementation costs, and the need for technical support and training. Pilot studies at comparable institutions have demonstrated that biometric attendance systems can significantly improve record accuracy and reduce administrative burdens (Okafor, 2024). This study will examine the design, implementation, and operational performance of the biometric attendance system at Federal University, Dutse. It will analyze system reliability, user acceptance, and the challenges related to data integration and security. Ultimately, the goal is to develop a robust framework for biometric attendance management that enhances administrative efficiency and academic integrity while addressing privacy and technical concerns.
Statement of the Problem
The traditional manual methods of recording attendance at Federal University, Dutse, are fraught with challenges including inaccuracies, proxy attendance, and significant administrative workload. These issues lead to unreliable data, which can affect academic planning and performance evaluations. Although biometric‑based attendance systems have the potential to address these problems by providing accurate and automated data collection, their implementation is met with several challenges. Technical issues such as system malfunctions, network connectivity, and integration with existing academic databases hinder smooth operation. In addition, concerns over the privacy and security of biometric data are significant among both staff and students (Abdul, 2023). There is also resistance from stakeholders who are accustomed to manual processes and are skeptical of the reliability of new technologies. The initial cost of setting up biometric devices and the need for ongoing technical support further complicate the adoption process. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a biometric attendance system at Federal University, Dutse by examining its accuracy, security, and overall impact on administrative efficiency. Through detailed analysis of system logs, user feedback, and security audits, the research seeks to identify the primary obstacles to successful implementation and propose strategies to mitigate them. The ultimate objective is to provide a comprehensive framework for the integration of biometric technologies into attendance management that ensures data integrity, enhances operational efficiency, and builds stakeholder trust (Chinedu, 2024).
